Background:

Queen Elizabeth High School was founded as a boys' grammar in 1599 by Elizabethan charter and became a comprehensive in 1976; specialist performing arts college status; further mathematics centre; pilot school for Science in the 21st Century. Located on a hillside to the west of Hexham with views across the Tyne valley, it recently expanded for the fourth time to cope with growing numbers; mixture of modern and listed Victorian buildings. A £1.5 million capital programme is under way to expand facilities in technology, drama and dance, business and enteprise, and hotel services. Students come from Hexham, Corbridge and neighbouring villages and hamlets within a 25-mile radius. Offers 36 A-level courses. The school has a vibrant programme of extra-curricular and community activities; lead role in Hexham Partnership; part of Tynedale Virtual College. Before-school care, from 8.30am.
