Background:

South Tynedale Middle School and community education centre is situated on the fringe of the Northumberland national park in the market town of Haltwhistle. The campus is sited in very pleasant surroundings with exceptional views over the South Tyne valley. The buildings were constructed in 1960 and housed a secondary school until local authority reorganisation in 1974, when the present middle school was created. The school has excellent facilities, with 11 classrooms, a state-of-the-art computer suite, a modern library, science laboratory, a hall, a gymnasium and specialist rooms for music, art and design technology. There are also splendid grounds incorporating extensive playing fields and a floodlit area. An extensive programme of clubs and teams operates within school. These include football, netball, rounders, gymnastics, tennis, trampoline, basketball, rugby, cricket and clubs are computer club, gardening club, homework club and youth club. This school has also achieved the following awards: Artsmark Gold, Sportsmark award and DfES achievement award. The school aims to create a caring, well-ordered environment in which each member of the school community will feel secure.
