Background:
Opened in 1977, the school occupies a purpose-built, single-storey building. It is one of 12 partner schools in East Tynedale 'working to achieve the highest standards of education'. The school offers specialist facilities for art, food technology, design technology, science and music in addition to an ICT suite which opened in 2001 with new computers linked to the internet. All other classrooms are also linked to the computer network, and there are 40 stations in all. Tuition in all musical instruments is offered at an extra cost. There are many sports teams and after-school activities, and children can join the school's music groups and choirs. The school is proud of its achievements and has won 'many' local trophies. Highfield Middle is over-subscribed, receiving 1.3 applications for each place. It received the DfES School Achievement Award for Excellence in 2001.
